Deepen your understanding of how to teach writing well!
How do we prepare students to write well? How can we offer supportive feedback to students so that they will use our feedback to improve their writing? How can we develop a mentoring stance as teachers of writing? How can we encourage revision in the writing process? Finally, how can we maintain balance in our lives when considering the time involved in providing feedback to our students?
Historically, the areas of each module that are most often skipped, altered, or hurried are the writing aspects of the module- namely the writing activities included throughout each module, ending with the culminating assignment.
In this workshop, we aim to address that need by demonstrating not only the importance of leveraging writing through all of the phases of the instructional arc, but how doing so benefits teachers and students alike. This workshop will also cover various methods for offering helpful feedback on student writing, not only once the assignment has been handed in, but during the writing process, thus facilitating the acquisition of student skills in the moment and giving educators opportunities to re-teach skills and understand student performance, which may ease the grading burden for teachers.
While not advocating for any particular stance, this workshop will also explore some ethical uses of AI for high school teachers and student writers.
In this two-part professional learning session for certified ERWC teachers, participants learn how to level up how they teach writing by leveraging existing ERWC curriculum and resources. Using ERWC 3.0 modules, mini-modules, and supplementary resources, we explore teaching strategies and frameworks that promote teaching writing well. Special attention is given to offering feedback and encouraging revision, approaches that help writers develop their skills, identities, and agency. This professional learning experience is intended to benefit ERWC teachers who want to maximize their ability to teach writing well, which will ultimately benefit our student writers.
