Terms of Use

The Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC) is the intellectual property of the Board of Trustees of California State University (CSU), which grants a non-exclusive, nontransferable limited license for access to the ERWC and the content contained therein, solely by ERWC-certified professionals teaching the course and their students. The ERWC is not an open-source curriculum, and permission agreements with copyright holders of content, including but not limited to module texts, require or contemplate that the materials only be accessible through the ERWC password-protected website. The module student versions and reading selections may be duplicated and distributed for student use only, in a manner consistent with the copyright law and these Terms of Use.

The posting of student versions and readings in digital formats is permissible, but only if they are posted behind a password-protected website or learning management system, such as Canvas, Schoology, Blackboard, etc., that is only available to students enrolled in ERWC courses. ERWC materials may not be posted on public websites, including but not limited to websites that may be accessed via a general search engine.

All rights not expressly granted are reserved to CSU, and any uses of the ERWC or content not expressly permitted are strictly prohibited. Users of the ERWC must not copy, reproduce, modify, alter, transfer, transmit, perform, publish, display, sub-license, distribute, circulate, provide access to, or rent, the content or any portion thereof. Furthermore, users must not (1) decompile, reverse engineer, disassemble, or otherwise determine or attempt to determine the source code (or the underlying ideas, algorithms, structure or organization) of the content or the ERWC; (2) upload files that contain viruses, Trojan horses, worms, time bombs, cancelbots, corrupted files, or any other similar software or programs that may damage the operation of the ERWC or the content; (3) take any actions, whether intentional or unintentional, that may circumvent, disable, damage or impair the control or security systems of the ERWC or the content, nor allow or assist a third party to do so; (4) use the content in a manner that causes harm to the ERWC, the content, CSU or its content providers, or in any manner that CSU may, in its sole discretion, deem inappropriate; or (5) disclose log-in information (including but not limited to passwords) or permit access to the ERWC and/or the content by unauthorized persons using an authorized user’s log-in information.

If there is a violation of these Terms of Use, CSU may, in its sole discretion, terminate or limit access to the ERWC. If there is any hacking, viral infection, or other technical attempts to gain unauthorized access to or cause damage to the ERWC, CSU shall be provided, as soon as possible, with written notice of any authorized use or distribution of the content, and all necessary steps must be taken to ensure that such unauthorized use or distribution is terminated.

While the ERWC modules, resources, and introductory professional learning experiences are available free of charge, conditions of use include the certification of all teachers teaching the course and the protection of intellectual property rights, both the CSU's and those of the authors who have generously allowed us to use their work. By agreeing to these Terms of Use, you are accepting responsibility to maintain the integrity of the materials you have accessed.

Questions regarding these Terms of Use may be directed to Zee Cline, (Interim Director) for CAR/W, CSU Chancellor's Office at zcline@calstate.edu.
