What We Offer
The ERWC (Expository Reading and Writing Curriculum) is a college preparatory, rhetoric-based English language arts course for grades 11 and 12 designed to develop academic literacy (advanced proficiency in rhetorical and analytical reading, writing, and thinking). The ERWC also offers curriculum for grades 7-10, with at least four extended modules per grade level. Modules with designated English Language Development (ELD) are available for grades 9-12.
ERWC 2.0 to be archived on September 1, 2021
Have you been using ERWC 2.0 in your classroom for a while now? If so, we want to let you know that ERWC 3.0 is here! Empower your students by completing your transition from ERWC 2.0 to 3.0 prior to September 1, 2021, when ERWC 2.0 will be archived--meaning the readings will no longer be available and the 2.0 modules will no longer be updated.
Some 2.0 modules (What’s Next? Thinking About Life After High School, Juvenile Justice, Into the Wild, Island Civilization…) have been updated and enhanced and now appear as ERWC 3.0 modules. Additionally, there are now many brand-new ERWC 3.0 modules, all with enhanced features such as the following:
- universal design for learning;
- inquiry-based approaches;
- support for emergent bilinguals;
- assets-based and culturally and linguistically sustaining pedagogies;
- and more!
Also, if you are teaching ERWC as a full, yearlong course, make sure that you adopt the 11th and/or 12th grade course so that your students will continue to benefit from taking an English course that supports college and career readiness and is A-G approved.

Adopt ERWC

Is your school considering adopting ERWC? Applying to adopt the course is easy! Schools interested in adopting the yearlong course may do so by submitting a two-page application to the CSU. Once approved, it is simple to add the course to your school’s UC-approved “a–g” list.
